Drug form and composition Solution for injection. One ampoule of 2 ml contains 80 mg of Thiamin hydrochloride (40 mg/ml).
Indications Vitamin B1 is used in cases of: avitaminosis B1; Wernicke’s encephalopathy; alcoholism; burning; gastrectomy; hemodialysis; liver and biliary ducts diseases; hyperthyroidism; severe infectious diseases; diseases of the small intestine (sprue, regional enteritis, persistent diarrhea).
Dosage and administration The injection is used parenterally: In adults, the drug is administered intramuscularly or intravenously in a doses 10 - 100 mg 3 times daily; in children, vitamin B1 is used intramuscularly or intravenously in a doses 10 - 20 mg daily.
Contraindications Vitamin B1 is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity to the drug.
Special warnings and precautions The drug administration is not recommended in the following diseases: cerebral syndrome; dermatitis; chronic diarrhea; psychic diseases; neuritis; ulcerous colitis, for the aims of appetite stimulation, because the effectiveness is not demonstrated. It should not be used in combined infusions with antibiotics and neuroleptics. In therapeutic doses the drug can be administered in pregnancy and lactation.
Drug interactions In cases of simultaneous administration of vitamin B1 and vitamin B12 in one syringe or solution for infusion, there is a risk of direct degradation of the vitamins by cobalt from vitamin B12.
Adverse reactions After venous injection of high doses, anaphylactic reactions ranging to thiamin shock can be observed. In high doses vitamin B1 can induce block in the autonomic ganglia and neuromuscular synapses.
Pharmacological mechanisms Vitamin B1 (thiamin) plays an important role as a coenzyme in carbohydrate and protein metabolism, and in the synthesis of the nucleic acids. Vitamin B1 is related to the activity of the nervous and the neuromuscular system. It facilitates the processes of biosynthesis of the main mediator acetylcholine and suppresses the enzyme cholinesterase (which degradates acetylcholine). In cases of lack of thiamin in the body, the transmission of the nervous impulses in the CNS synapses and the mental functions are disturbed.
Supplied 10 or 100 ampoules of 2 ml (80 mg).
